Maximize Production By Maintaining Work Tools

To maximize any machine’s performance, it’s of the utmost importance to take proper care of its work tools.

The selection of your machine’s ground-engaging tools (G.E.T.) is one of the most important decisions you make on your machine, regardless of the job. Having the right G.E.T. affects your equipment’s longevity, productivity, fuel consumption, and maintenance costs.

The new Cat® Advansys™ helps you to optimize the performance of your work tools. with tips and adapters that reduce operating costs, decrease downtime, and allow more material to be moved with less wear on your machinery. The Advansys hammerless system simplifies the installation process by using integrated retention components. The seamless retrofitting process easily drops adapters into place, extending the tools’ wear life.

Carter’s selection of G.E.T. for Cat machines such as dozers, excavators, backhoe loaders, loaders, paving equipment, and more include:

  • Sidebar, edge, wear and ripper protection
  • Cutting edges
  • Tips
  • Adapters

Managing Your G.E.T.

Your local Carter Machinery can help develop an equipment management program that minimizes preventable problems on your machinery. Managing your G.E.T. equipment will help your company maximize production, while limiting downtime and operating costs. At Carter, we can also assist with inventory and technical support needs for your G.E.T.

Many factors go into the proper management of a machine’s G.E.T., including the amount of contact surface the tool has, the angle used for the work, and the level of wear the tool is subjected to before being replaced.

The more surface area your tools are subjected to, the harder your machine needs to work. This can cause undue stress to the equipment, resulting in inefficient use of horsepower and fuel, as well as increasing the amount of time needed to complete the job.

What To Look For On G.E.T.

By performing preventative maintenance on your machinery, you can anticipate the need for equipment repair and service, helping you plan downtime so you can avoid unexpected machine failure.

Preventative maintenance on G.E.T. could include inspecting tools for the following conditions:

  • Cracks on base edges – Look for damage on top and bottom of the rear weld.
  • Excessive wear on bucket tips – The tip should be replaced if it has worn through on the bottom or cracked in the pocket area.
  • Damaged or missing retainer pins – Tap lightly on each pin. If the pin moves easily, it’s time to replace the retainer.
  • Damage to bucket tip adapters – Bottom straps that have worn into the bottom cavity should be replaced.
  • Loose, damaged, or missing retainer bolts
