Are You Compliant With Emergency Power Supply Regulations?
Not all construction jobs are created equal, from a legal standpoint. Work for nursing facilities and manufacturing industries requires special planning when it comes to emergency power supply systems (EPSS).
Natural emergencies such as hurricanes, thunderstorms, mudslides, tornadoes, and flooding can cost a manufacturing plant millions of dollars. In addition, without adequate backup electricity during a power outage, they can compromise the health and lives of patients in nursing facilities. While power outages can occur for many different reasons, locations along the coast should take additional consideration to the possibility of hurricanes and resulting problems.
Nursing Facilities
Due to the delicate nature of healthcare services provided, nursing facilities are required to have an EPSS with enough fuel to power generators for at least 72 hours, should power be lost. These facilities are also encouraged to have an alternate emergency power supply (EPS) available in case the generator malfunctions.
In Virginia, licensed nursing facilities must have a Level 1 EPSS – a system installed for equipment that, if experiencing equipment failure, could result in serious injury or loss of human life. For example, the Level 1 EPSS must power things such as fire detection systems and essential ventilation systems, fire pumps, life safety illumination, elevators, public safety communication systems, and more.
Level 2 EPSS is a system installed for equipment malfunction that would be less critical to human life. Level 2 EPSS is designed to power components such as heating and refrigeration systems, sewage disposal, lighting, and industrial processes.
Manufacturing Facilities
Having an EPS is extremely important to manufacturing facilities, which stand to lose significant money in the case of a power outage. A survey released in 2015 discovered that 74% of companies worldwide had a supplier-related disruption within the past year – such as those caused by weather emergencies. Furthermore, 14% of these companies lost more than $1.1 million as a result.
Natural disasters, fires, and violent incidents in the workplace can all create an emergency situation for companies. Preventative maintenance and testing of generators and backup power systems is key to protecting your bottom line during an outage.
Carter Machinery knows that when the power is out, you need power you can depend on. Let Carter help you prepared with expert, industry know-how to effectively plan, install, maintain, and support your EPS plans and power generation needs.
